In 1978, Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank had a vision of one-stop shopping for DIY-ers. A year later, Home Depot was born when the first two stores opened in Atlanta on June 22, 1979. The first stores were around 60,000-square feet and filled with 25,000 products. Today, The Home Depot’s 2,200 stores in the U.S., Canada and Mexico average 105,000-square feet and more than 1 million products for its DIY customers to peruse, including power tools, building materials, gardening tools and kitchen and electrical appliances.
